A little history:

Streatham Hill dates back to Roman times, it's importance being defined by the road itself (High Road). During the 5th century it's name was given as "Brixtane" which was a stone location where the "Brixton Hundred" met in Saxon times. During Medieval times the area was known for it's valued coppiced woodland. "Brixton Causeway Coppice" covered the northern side of Streatham Hill while "Leigham Wood" was to the south. House-building in the area began in the late 18th century around New Park Road. Planned developments began in the early 19th century, with a thoroughfare including houses and shops. Large mansions were built at this time and by mid-century Streatham Hill Station opened - the year being 1856. This spawned the development of Telford Park and Tierny Road estates in the 1870s. By the 1900s there was a tram system in place as well as the Omnibus, establishing the area as a suburban commuter town. During the 1920s redevelopment of the high road into shops and entertainment locales established Streatham as the "Entertainment Centre of South London". Much of this atmosphere remains to this day.
